SHOULD CHRISTIANS FEAR JUDGMENT FOR SIN?

When you place your faith in Jesus Christ and his finished work on the cross sin is no longer the issue for you. God made him to be sin on your behalf so you might become the righteousness of God in him. Jesus paid the full penalty for sin on the cross so we don’t have to. There is no condemnation (judgment) for those that are in Christ Jesus.

So what is the judgment seat of Christ then? When a believer stands in judgment it’s going to be in order to receive rewards. The Bible tells us “We will all have to stand before the judgment seat of God.” The good news is it won’t be for sin but for eternal reward. Jesus has already been tried and punished for sin in our place so it’s as if we were tried and punished. God won’t try us again. It’s like the law of double jeopardy that states you can’t be tried twice for the same crime.

The Apostle Paul told us “But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself…Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.” (1 Corinthians 4:3-5) Did you catch that? When the Lord comes…each man’s “Praise” will come to him from God. You see it will be time for praise for the Christian not judgment for sin.

So, for now we are told to occupy until he comes and love each other. This is the command he has given us until his return. “So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await him.”(Hebrews 9:28) Christ’s second coming for the Christian has no reference to sin because he has already dealt with the sin issue once and for all on the cross.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.” (1 John 4:18) NASB
