Lately the theme with me from God has been “Maturity.” It seems no matter where I turn the answer is “Grow up!” Whether it’s for me personally or someone else the solution is maturity.

If you look in the book of Ephesians you will see maturity as the whole goal of the church. Paul said, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting (maturing) of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ…” Wow! so you see God’s whole reason for giving the church what is commonly known as the “Fivefold ministry” is so we all grow up.

Of course this doesn’t mean we don’t need each other anymore but rather it means we all come to the place where we hear from God rather than always needing to run to another person. There will always be times when others are sought out in order to gain wisdom but the goal is for us to grow up and be there for others instead of always being the needy one.

Lately it has become more and more apparent that we live in a society full of immature people. Without getting into the politics of it all let me just say, if we as a whole were more mature or responsible we wouldn’t find our government stepping in to be our mother so much. We would have more people displaying more personal responsibility and in less need of government intrusion. For the sake of those that need it spelled out for them let me just say I am not saying there is never a time when we need assistance what I am saying is immaturity breeds an attitude of “I don’t have to because that’s what the government is there for.” Of course this flows over into other areas too. Sometimes the church itself is guilty of fostering this type of thought process too. Some think that is what the church is there for. “Well, that’s what the church is for isn’t it? They are suppose to help me.” This becomes a way of life and just another reason for some to not grow up and take personal responsibility also. So where did we go wrong and what do we do now?

That’s a great question but the answer isn’t that difficult really. The answer is “I”, personally, have to grow up and live as a responsible adult even if others refuse to do so. I believe there are many that want to grow up but they are having a difficult time finding an adult to model what that looks like. That’s where the church comes in. The church is here to display the “manifold wisdom of God.” We are called to be an example to the watching world so they might see what God’s intention and plan for all of humanity is. I pray that the church will grow up and be the mature, perfect, whole expression of Christ in the earth.

  1. yea that’s a problem I have experienced all my Christian life is to find others who will help me in my desire to grow-up.i have learned a lot by reading books and articles like the ones you post and liberating secret-but in person to person relations with people who call themselves Christian it has been very frustrating.god told me one day as I was driving down the road that he was going to be my father that I never had in my childhood and boy has he helped me to grow up.

    • Amen Kenneth, we all need someone to be a role model don’t we? Of course the really good news is Christ himself coming to live within us and being the mature one within isn’t it? Thank God he has “perfected” or “matured” us in Christ and all that’s left for us is to discover what all that entails.
      thanks bro.
