When Jesus talked with Nicodemus in John 3 he told him “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
It seems when Nicodemus, a teacher, came to Jesus he was looking for a teaching method or lesson plan but Jesus turned the conversation around on him. Jesus told him “You must be born again.” The kingdom of God doesn’t operate by the same rules or methods the world does. Once you are born again you begin being lead by the Spirit of God and he doesn’t lead in that manner.
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and he probably knew the Law of God. He most likely knew all of the Old Covenant stories and doctrines, but now Jesus is telling him something he doesn’t understand. Jesus is describing something Nicodemus has absolutely no comprehension of. Nicodemus is thinking in terms of study, method and memorization, and Jesus is telling him he has to be given life from above and learn how to walk after the Spirit.
Walking in the Spirit requires a brand new set of eyes and ears. It isn’t learned in the same way we learn spelling or math. Once he births us, by way of his Spirit, and takes up residence within us the whole of our Christian life becomes about learning how to hear from the Spirit of God and walking where he leads. Sometimes we get glimmers of things God is showing us; and other times we simply walk by faith knowing he is in us and is guiding us even when we don’t see what he’s doing.
Let me finish by saying if we’re honest most of us start the same as Nicodemus. We all want to go to a seminar, read the best books and listen to the greatest teachers and preachers, but the truth is we only really have one teacher. The Holy Spirit is our teacher. There may be many, many books and mentors, but it isn’t until we learn how to hear from God for ourselves that we really see the kingdom Jesus told Nicodemus about. While Nicodemus, like many of us, wanted Jesus to give him some method or lesson plan for the kingdom Jesus shocked him by telling him things don’t work that way with God. He uses gentle nudges like a breeze and we have to learn spontaneously in the moment.
