Have you ever noticed how the media is so quick to look to the so called experts for the answers as to why someone does something? Everyone is scrambling to figure out why this young man in Connecticut committed this horrendous act and rightfully so. The thing about it to me is most never look quite deep enough. They look at what medications he may have been on, how he was treated when he was younger, his relationship to his parents, the fact that he played violent video games etc. But there is one thing I haven’t heard yet and that is what was his relationship to God like or did he even have one at all?

I have come to the conclusion that most involved in investigating these types of things really have another reason for not seeing this as a spiritual problem. They would rather think it is a physical malfunction in the brain because then they can simply blame it on medicine or in some cases prescribe even more in hopes they can rearrange brain chemicals. You see if this is merely a physical misfire it can be treated with medical procedures and pharmaceuticals. On the other hand if it is a spiritual problem all of the so called experts will have to admit they are powerless to help or fix things. That is why most simply refuse to acknowledge this just might be a spiritual problem that is beyond our ability to correct. If we acknowledge our inability we will be forced to look to one outside of the temporal, material realm to save us and most aren’t willing to do that.

While I in no way want to be insensitive about these types of things I do believe the only real lasting solution to the problem will only occur if there is a heart change. Even though we have made great advances in medicine and therapy there is only one person who can give us the heart change we are in need of and his name is Jesus Christ. Without a supernatural intervention we are merely putting temporary, earthly band aids on a terminal, spiritual condition.

God told us way back in the Old Testament book of Ezekiel about a New Covenant he would make. He said, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.” So you see it is only when God gives us a new heart, and his Spirit, that we will begin to walk in his ways; until then we are spinning our wheels trying to find spiritual answers in the earthly realm, with merely mans wisdom.

  1. Good post–I was telling a Christian friend about how The Lord guided me to move to tulsa,ok–her friend said to me–why didn’t god direct someone to stop that killer in conn.–I did not know how to answer her

    1. Well you know maybe he did. The problem comes in because we do have a free will and there is that little thing called disobedience. As awful as some things are I know for me I choose to believe God is still good and there will be glory that comes from this too. As far as knowing how to answer people sometimes I just say, “I don’t know.” I’m glad I don’t have to have all the answers aren’t you?
