My father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:8)
When God is working in someone’s life we, that have eyes to see it, are to give thanks. This is one way God is glorified in us. The plan is for the Father to receive glory when we give him free reign to produce his miraculous life through us.
Jesus said it like this; “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Of course we know it is really Him that is doing the good works but to the watching world it looks as if it’s only us. This too is, I think, what James meant when he said, “Faith without works is dead.” If we have the Spirit of God living in us there is going to be some sort of evidence that shines through us to others. It can’t be any other way.
When it comes to bearing fruit it is always for others. You never see a tree partaking of its own fruit do you? Now of course there is that peculiar case as witnessed in “The Wizard of Oz” movie when that apple tree became upset with Dorothy for picking his fruit, but for the most part I think the fruit is meant to be for others. For Christians it’s the same. When Christ is producing something wonderful in our lives we naturally want to share it with others. This is how we prove to be his disciples. Discipleship is proven to others when we give away what God is manifesting in us. The fruit is always for another.
When the Spirit of God takes up residence within someone he begins to live his life through them. Seeing how God is love he can only be love which is always going to be for others. What’s within us is eventually going to come out of us and love always places others first. So life becomes this adventure of giving of oneself for others. There is a continual dying that takes place in the believer because the sacrificial, die for others, nature of the one living in you.
This God, who is love, is the creator of everything so it isn’t surprising to see how everything in his universe behaves in this way. It seems everything exists to lay down its life for another. All vegetables, fruits, meats etc. are here to give their life for the life of another. Even wood from trees are here to be made into tables, chairs, houses etc. They live their lives just for the purpose of laying it down for others. While I know we are not vegetables or trees we are only going to find our real purpose in life by giving ourselves in some way for others. Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.” So you see this is God’s design for everything. The only way anything truly finds fulfillment in life is to die for others in some way. This is bearing fruit for the glory of the Father.
