The Bible tells an amazing story. The Apostle Paul reveals to us in his Roman letter something no man could have dreamed up. He makes it plain that all of us no matter what color, sex, or nationality are all sinners. We have all fallen short of God’s required perfection. That’s the bad news.
The Gospel or good news is God didn’t leave us in that predicament. Although he knew all along we had absolutely no ability to rectify the problem he thankfully did what was required. He sent his son here to live a sinless life, die the sinner’s death and be raised again from the dead. As if that isn’t good enough news there’s more. Paul tells us in Romans 6 that we died with him. “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death?” God demands perfection from us, we can’t possibly make that happen so we must die. “The wages of sin is death.” God loves us so much he came in his Son to die on our behalf. I’m not talking about just a single man, Jesus, dying on a cross 2,000 years ago though. No, God in the spirit realm co-crucified us with him. He placed us in his son on the cross. Therefore when he died, we died and when he was raised we were raised. Hallelujah!!!
What I wanted to share with you today though is there is yet more to this story. It wasn’t enough that God co-crucified us and raised us with Christ he also “Raised us up with him, and seated us with him in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” We that have placed our faith in Christ, and the work of the cross, are forever joined to him in a union of spirits. In 1 Corinthians 6:17 Paul said, “He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit.”
In other words let me just say this; we already have victory in Christ. We have victory over sin and have been set free from the law. “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” These things are either true or they are not. Obviously we are still on earth and still dealing with a fallen world but in the eternal, spirit realm it is finished. We are eternal spirit beings that are going to outlive all that our human eyes and intellect sees in the here and now. One day, in some way, even our bodies will be transformed to catch up with our resurrected spirits. “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
There is coming a day when all that is true of us in spirit will manifest in an outer way. Jesus Christ defeated Satan on the cross once and for all but for us that are still living in this thing called time we are waiting. The ancient promise given to the serpent “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel” has already happened. We are the body of Christ on the earth at this time. Let me leave you with this verse found at the end of Romans 16. Paul said, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” For the most part Satan is like a playground bully. He knows how to intimidate, cuss, accuse and terrify but when it comes right down to it he has no power in a believer’s life. He can’t do anything but blow smoke, and if we don’t really trust and put our faith in these things I have shared; we will live defeated lives even from a victorious, ascended, heavenly position.
