“God is God and you are not!” You should have heard the giggles in the room when I made this comment; but it’s okay because I asked everyone to repeat it after me. I went on to explain in Isaiah 41:13 it says, I am your God who upholds your right hand saying fear not, I will help you. God doesn’t need our help, but we need His. As I spoke these things to a room full of women wearing orange, they heard me say “at some time you put yourself as god and made your own decision, because you ended up here.” I continued to say I have done the same thing, but didn’t get caught. Satan said in Isaiah 14:14 that he was going to make himself “like the Most High.” He also told Eve that if she ate from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, her eyes would be opened and she would be like God. Do you think Satan has stopped telling that same lie to us every day?
I want to quote from Watchman Nee; “When Adam and Eve were in the garden, God did not give them a choice. He said do not eat of this tree. With their disobedience, that gave Satan power to influence them.” For example, if I had three items and only two of them were for sale; say you picked the one that wasn’t for sale. That wasn’t one of the choices. God gave them every tree in the garden to choose from, except one. That is what made it disobedience. Notice that when they ate of the fruit, they looked at themselves instead of God and saw they were naked. They took their eyes off of God and put them on themselves. This then is the reason God gave us his law. His law is a mirror to show us how we truly look. Once we look into God’s mirror of the law we see the truth about ourselves, our sins and God. It is then that we discover our inability to be “like God.”
The good news is God provided a way out of death; He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus. I love John 3:16 because it says, For God so loved the world that He gave. God is love and love gives, it’s an out ward motion of what is inside. The Bible says that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to the Father, but by Him. When God, through the Holy Spirit, lives inside you and transforms you, you will begin to act like Him because it is in Him we live and move and have our being.
Every week in jail is so different from the last; Joanna, Carla and Margo were here this week. Margo is a retired teacher in Trigg County who has been subbing a kindergarten class for a teacher who is recovering from surgery. Her class overheard she was going to the jail and asked if they could help. Margo asked them, “How would you like to help?” She held in her hand two big yellow envelopes full of Mother’s Day cards they drew for the ladies in jail. Mrs. Zander walked around the room with tissues as the ladies received an especially hand crafted card from precious little children. Margo told a story of each one as she handed them out to every woman who wanted one.
We all got several notes to council the ladies as they had unfinished business to take care of with God. He picked out two girls for me to listen to. Originally they wanted to talk to Carla, but they got me instead. The one girl who had dark hair wanted to be there for moral support for the long haired girl. She had been confused on what a testimony was and needed it explained. Through her tears she told me of how she has lived her whole young life without recognizing God’s love for her. Horrible things have happened to her she felt God did to her, and she was ticked off about it. Until recently while in isolation, God spoke to her in a real way. She was crying out to Him in the shower and asked Him where He has been, when the water just stopped. She got out and felt God was telling her to read Acts where it talks about baptism. She goes back to the shower and says, okay God, and water starts to flow down on her. She told me she got saved right then and there. “Is that what a testimony is?” She asked. I said yes.
