I heard her say, “Set me free, I want to be free.” “Set you free from what?” I asked her. “Can’t you see the chains around me?” She asked. Tell me what is going on with you so that we can all understand. I’m the slave girl Luke wrote about in Acts 16. I remember when I was really young, things were simple back then. I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, but the men of the city made me a slave; because I could tell people what was going to happen before it happened. Before that, I used to play and hang around my friends. Now, they take all my money and make me work all day.
I remember when Paul and Silas came into town they stayed with Lydia and her family. Have you seen her purple robes she makes? They are so beautiful! It was right after that, I saw the three of them walking past my work, where I used to tell fortunes and read palms. I couldn’t resist, so I jumped up and followed them. I started shouting at them, I said, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” I knew it, too. I did this every time they passed by. I was hoping it would run them off, but something happened that I didn’t expect. Listen to this, Paul turned around after several days and said, “In the name of Jesus, I command you to come out of her.” He wasn’t even talking to me he was talking to the unclean spirit in me. It left me immediately, and I haven’t felt the same since. Matter of fact, I lost my job after that but I didn’t care because I felt more free than I ever have in my whole life. Not only on the inside, but I was no longer a slave to the men of the city.
After hearing Lydia’s testimony about her family and sharing my experience with her you can be sure is was God who set us free. Did I tell you about the beating Paul and Silas received after all this? The men of the city were so angry they dragged them into the market place, where everyone could see. Then they were thrown into the prison. Later I heard about the salvation and baptism of the jailer and his whole family. The earthquake shook the chains off Paul and Silas when they were singing praises to the Lord. God even used the jailer to clean their wounds and feed them. After that things were never the same.
If you asked me what God was doing in the jail tonight; I would tell you many of the girls realized it’s about the Spirit of God who lives within those of us who are born again. I told them how we are all a servant. Some are a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. If we are a servant of the Most High God, then we are set free from sin, death and hell. Jesus is the only one who can set us free then we are free indeed.
