When it comes to helping people get in contact with God it takes a miracle. I mean we can teach, remind, encourage and admonish all we want to but it still takes a miracle. The way to God or heaven, as some might say, basically falls into one of three methods. We earn it, learn it or receive it.
Most people will try to earn it first. They think if they are just moral enough God will accept them. They may give money to needy people or spend their time working in a soup kitchen or other charitable endeavors. Maybe, they think, if they sacrifice enough it will appease God, and he will let them in. These folks haven’t realized God requires perfection yet. They think he grades on a curve. Looking around at others they might think, “I’m no where near as bad as them.” Until they realize the only one they are to compare themselves with is Jesus; they will live under the delusion that they are okay.
This second group thinks the path is knowledge. Nicodemus is a prime example of this. His story is told in the third chapter of the Gospel of John. He was a teacher in Israel that came to Jesus at night. He apparently thought Jesus had some secret knowledge he needed, before he could enter God’s kingdom. Of course Jesus told him “except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” He was clueing Nicodemus in to the fact that without a miracle no one can enter the kingdom. He even reprimanded him saying, “Are you not a teacher of Israel, and you don’t know these things?”
In the same way there is another group that thinks knowledge or enlightenment is the way to God. They are those some call “The New Age” movement. I am not going to try and define all the different nuances of this group, but I will say one thing about them. They are those that think mankind is already divine, but we just don’t know it yet. We have the divine within us, and all it takes is for us to wake up to this fact. In other words, when it comes right down to it, we are gods. We haven’t any need of repentance or forgiveness from anyone just enlightenment.
The last group, the group I am in, is the group that believes one must receive Jesus Christ into your life in order to get to God. Truth be told Jesus Christ is God, and we don’t actually get to him he came to us. Wow! God himself in the form of a human being came here to us. He knew what some of us have discovered. We have absolutely no ability to earn or learn our way to him. It takes a miracle, and God is the only one who can provide it. Without him giving of himself to us we couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to give ourselves to him.
