Acknowledging there is a problem is the first step towards recovery. This is a statement straight from a twelve step program, but it is the truth whether you are in a program or not. Unless you recognize your need of a doctor you aren’t going to go see one. In other words, unless you are sick you don’t need a doctor. That is exactly what Jesus said to the Pharisees of his day when they asked why he was eating with tax collectors and sinners. His response was “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Most of the times if you go to the doctor, for something like a disease or the flu they will give you a prescription. Sometimes if you are really sick they will give you a shot and a prescription. In the case of being sin sick we definitely needed a shot and a follow up prescription. Jesus, being the great physician, gives us a shot that a doctor might call a cocktail. It is a mixture of forgiveness and righteousness mixed together with the main ingredient called eternal life. Once having received the initial shot he also gives us a prescription. I think it was Dr. Paul the Apostle who has written it out for us “rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.”

In case you didn’t know it we all need this doctor, because we have all been infected with sin sickness. After your initial meeting with this doctor, and the administering of the shot of eternal life, there may be need of follow up visits from time to time for check ups. The good thing about this doctor is his schedule, and he always has lots of patients, but he knows how to schedule them so he can tend to them all. He is the same in some ways as human doctors, because you may have to wait to hear from him, but it is well worth the wait.
