WE MUST STOP GOING TO CHURCH

The way we say things sometimes will betray us. I mean as a believer I believe and want everyone to know Jesus Christ. Traditionally the way this takes place is you invite someone to church services with you. They hopefully hear the Gospel message and respond by giving their lives over to Christ.

I am here to tell you that going to church isn’t Biblical. What do you mean going to church isn’t Biblical? It may just be a misunderstanding about what the church is. You see we sometimes use the word “church” to describe a building that people gather in to worship, study and fellowship, but I’m here to tell you that isn’t a church. The building isn’t a church. The church is a group of believers that are indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God. We just may meet in a building to worship, but we are the actual church. If this is true then we don’t go to church we are the church.

I know this isn’t new to most, but it is amazing how calling a building a church can infiltrate our thinking. The building becomes the church in our minds and then if we aren’t careful it becomes our goal to get people to come to a building rather than getting them to come to Christ.

If you read the New Testament I would challenge you to find a building that the early church met in on a regular basis other than a house. In fact I would suggest that God had Titus to destroy the Temple in Jerusalem just because he didn’t want a building to become the focus. Do you remember when Jesus said “Behold, your house is left to you desolate” he was talking to a bunch of people who refused to come to him. He called the Temple “your house.” It was no longer the place where God came to meet with them, and it had been taken over by religion, so God let them have it.

Later after Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit believers were indwelt by the Spirit of God. Now, we the believer are the Temple of God. Wherever a Spirit filled believer goes the Temple goes, therefore we are where God meets with his people. Whoa! What a statement to make huh? Are we short changing what God wants to do through his people by living with the idea a building is the house of God?

God’s word says “The Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands.” And again it says “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth and does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.”

God dwelt in a Tabernacle or Tent in the Wilderness. He then met with the priests in a more permanent structure called the Temple. Once Jesus came it was said of him, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The actual word for dwelt used in that verse is Tabernacled. Now since the death, burial, resurrection and ascension the Holy Spirit dwells, or Tabernacles, within us the believers. It seems all along God wanted to live within us. We must stop going to church and be the church.

    • Thank you Carol. Don’t you just love it that the omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent God of the universe decided to make his abode within us?
We no longer have to go to the Temple or any other building to come in contact with him we just have to call out and he hears!
