Grace (unmerited favor) aahh…. what a great thought favor, especially with God. We are told to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

Growing in favor, how does that happen? Great question right? Peter tells us to grow in grace. I’m thinking how do we do that if this favor is unmerited, and we can’t do anything to deserve it how can we do anything to grow in it? I believe I have come to a conclusion on this matter; come with me if you will.

The word grace does mean favor but the root of this word is defined: to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior; to favor. The mind of Christ is all about others and as far as stooping I don’t think anyone has ever stooped as low as he did. The scriptures tell us God not only became a man but a servant and not only a servant but one that was obedient even to the most horrible death ever. Now that is GRACE!!! So we have a command to grow in this thing called grace. We see what it is in Christ, the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Throughout the Word, God commands us to care for widows and orphans. I believe this includes all who are in a helpless, needy situation if it be hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked, sick, or in prison. Remember grace means stooping to show favor. We grow in it by doing a little stooping ourselves for others as Jesus did for us. By this we help someone in need and we are also benefited by growing in grace all the while.

Recently I was at the Jail and the story of the lost son became so real to me; while I spoke with a young man twenty years old who had been charged with murder. He seemed scared and confused, but as I spoke with him God revealed to me how I could be him, and it broke my heart. In the story of the lost son the older brother seemed very self righteous. He acted as if he had never done anything wrong and wasn’t as bad as his younger brother. He wrongly thought he deserved to be treated with favor whereas his brother didn’t. Sometimes we forget we don’t deserve God’s favor and when we do we start to look down on others. This is a dangerous place to be, but seeing it in yourself is in fact evidence that you are growing in grace. To God be the glory Amen!
